At the beginning of Tone It Up: 28 Days to Fit, Fierce, and Fabulous, Katrina Scott and Karena Dawn share stories about their relationships with their bodies and how they stumbled upon health. It is nothing dramatic, although there was drug abuse and addiction. They seemed to have recovered fairly quickly and snapped out of it.
For most of us, I don’t think that is the case. We usually need a moment, an instance, where the world seems to stop and demand for us to take care of ourselves. If we are lucky, we take note and follow suit. Sometimes, we are not so lucky. But, if you want that snap, the shock of cold water on you, this is the book for you.
The title is cutesy and I was hesitant to approach the book because, let’s face it: that is a lot of promises in a short amount of time. While it has not been 28 days for me to follow through this book’s directions, I had it for a week, followed the instructions, and noticed significant change in my body. Each body is different and we all respond to exercises differently. However, I think the book works well because it guides you for 28 straight days with encouragements and a list of workouts that you can try out for a challenge.
My favorite thing about the book is the layout, though. The pictures are lovely, the stories and testimonials from the Tone It Up team sprinkled throughout just perfectly, and the honesty in the tone of the book is refreshing. There is no arrogance here, only love. It seriously felt like a sisterhood of fitness women, a community where no one bashes the other.
I watched the Tone It Up videos and the same thing appeared: positivity and love for and between commenters.
You will learn about nutrition in this book. I have to say that some of it is unrealistic. Personally, I cannot afford goji berries on the regular. The assumption that we all can afford certain foods was somewhat frustrating. I said to myself, “That sounds lovely. But I am too poor!”
The other important question to answer was: is it vegan friendly? And the answer to that is a resounding heck yes! Some of the recipes include eggs and honey, but you can replace those with tofu and agave, no big deal. They promote eating green foods mostly, which is what us vegans do best, right?
This book was encouraging, informative, emotional, and sweetly inspiring. I am overweight and reading this book makes me hope that I can be fit, fierce, and fabulous physically. It is a really quick read, a charming tone, and a welcoming introduction to fitness.
Check out the book when it comes out in May, check out Tone It Up on YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter. Prepare for hard work, but fun and bubbly buddies to help you along the way.
