Etsy Love: Faux Fur Coats

October 6, 2010 By Mandi

Okay, Okay, Okay.. I know that fur is supposed be “all the rage this season” and that makes me a bit nauseous. But thankfully there is an abundance of vintage faux fur available on Etsy. And who doesn’t love the plush proshness and cozy warmth of a faux fur jacket?  I know many of you are probably up in the air about fake fur, since at first glance people cannot tell that it is not the skin of a dearly departed friend. I struggle with the ethics of this and haven’t decided if faux is for me or not.  However,  I do know that all faux fur jackets should be garnished with an anti-fur pin on the lapel. Here are some great pins from PETA and HSUS:

I have also heard horror stories about fur labeled as “faux” really being dog or cat fur. Say what? Seriously. Check out this handy guide on how to spot real fur vs. fake.

What is your opinion on faux fur? Does it send the wrong message? Or is it along the lines of faux leather – fine because you know it is your personal ethical decision?

I think faux fur keeps the real fur industry alive. It sends the message that fur is fashionable when it’s not and from far away you can’t tell the difference. Until fake fur is off the market and real fur wearers stand out the industry won’t die. That and many fake fur trims turn out to be real.
I’ve seen the videos of animals skinned alive for their fur and when you see that you’ll likely agree that even fake fur is heinous and sends the wrong message.

I think it’s great to fake it. Anything is better than wearing dead animals that were slaughtered so you can think you look good.

I don’t actually wear fake fur, but I have bought pleather items (purse, shoes). You are right though…. it does send the wrong message.
