Are you a Role Model?
Short and Sweet: Here is a process that I have observed since becoming vegan, from my co-workers
First-moment someone learns that your Vegan
- “where do you get your protein from”?
- “next comment “I can’t imagine not eating meat or not having cheese”
I tell them I get my protein from nuts, quinoa, veggies like kale, lentils, beans, sprouted-grain bread
A two-days later
- “What do you eat for breakfast”?
- “Do you eat fish”?
- “Do you ever miss meat”?
Everyday for breakfast I eat oats (from Bob’s Red Mill), organics raisins, cinnamon, and Chia seeds (from Bob’s Red Mill) heated up with water
A month later
- “Look what I bought to eat, it’s gluten-free or it’s vegan”
- “I switched out all of my processed bread for Food for Life, Ezekial whole weatberry bread”
- “I went to my first vegan restaurant”
They say this with pride and excitement.
So, for the last 7 years, I’ve noticed a process that non-vegan people go through, and that is that they first ReJect it – contemPLATE it – and then TRY IT.
Which proves to me that we as vegans are role models. We are doing a great thing for our health and for the animals, this inspires others.
Most people now are at least aware of junk food vs. healthy food, they know what a vegan is and I see changes in grocery stores for more gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan choices and in some resaurants. Documentary movies like Forks Over Knives have made a huge impact. Several celebreties have gone vegan and that gives it global attention.
In daily conversation, I talk with people who have not made the true mind-body connection that what we eat -everything we eat- directly affects our health, our environment and safety of animals. But when the subject comes up and I tell them how I’m vegan, they start their questions. I know the process has begun. That now, makes me happy. I know they are trying to get healthier even if it takes some time to make the necessary food changes and open up their awareness.

Great post! You’re totally right. I’ve had the same thing happen with my co-workers–and I work at Whole Foods! You’ll get the people every now and then who are just so defensive of their diets that they’ll always reject it, but most people are very reasonable. Once they see that it’s nothing crazy hard and hear all the benefits about it, they are more open to trying it. My boyfriend has experienced the same kind of responses at his workplace.
